- Stems 0.5-2 cm diameter, 1 m long, green, later grey-green. Ribs 8-12. Areoles 6-8 mm apart. Periferal spines 8-12, needle-like, thin, reddish brown. Central spines 3-4, brownish, tip yellow. Flower 7-8 cm long, carmine, zygomorphous. Fruit round, 1.2 cm diameter, with spines. Pulpa yellowish. Seed 1.5x1 mm, blackish brown.

- Mexico: Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Vera Cruz, Puebla, Potosí, above 2000 m in cloud forests.
