- Epiphytic or terrestric, upright or hanging. Primary stem more or less round, 30-40 cm long. Stems 2-6 cm long, up to 2.5 cm broad, 0.6 cm thick. Areoles with white felt. Spines up to 30 on older areoles, up to 5 mm long. Flower bright carmine, 6 cm long, 4.5 cm diameter. Ovary slightly five- tot seven-angled. Receptacle 3.5 cm long. Petals up to 12 mm broad. Filaments in two rows. Stigmas almost white. Fruit yellow-green or shiny reddish, with blunt angles. Seed shiny dark brown.

- Brazil: Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro (Itatiaia), São Paulo (Serra da Mantiqueira, Campos do Jordão). In cloud forest, 1600 2500 m.
