- Up to 1 m long. Stem cylindric, 1-3 cm diameter, with grey-brown bark. Segments flat, 3 cm long, 2 cm broad, crenate, not dentate. Areoles with hairs. Flower actinomorphic, up to 5 cm long, magenta. Ovary four-angled, dark green. Receptacle 3 cm long. Petals up to 1.2 cm broad. Style white below, upper part magenta. Filaments pink, anthers dark pink. Stigmas cream. Fruit bright red, bluntly four-angled, 1-1.2 cm long, 0.7 cm diameter. Seed 1.5 mm, shiny dark chestnut-brown.

- Brazil: Rio de Janeiro (Serra dos Orgãos). Epiphytic and terrestric in cloud forests, 1350 2200 m.
