- Upright, later hanging. Laterally branching from the lower areoles, sometimes more apically. Stems 2-3 cm br, up to 45 cm long, flat or with three or more angles, serrate. Areoles 1 mm diameter, up to 2 cm apart. Spines 0-6, up to 1 cm long, yellowish or whitish, upright or spreading. Older areoles have more spines. Flower lateral, up to 1.5 cm long, 1.2 cm diameter, orange. Ovary 6 mm diameter, green or reddish, sharply four- to five-angled, with 2-5 scales and felt. Petals 1 cm long, 0.5 cm broad. Stamens whitish, style white or cream. Fruit orange, later light pink, up to 1 cm diameter. Seed dark brown, pear-shaped, 1.5 mm.

Pfeiffera monacantha - Bolivia: Cochabamba, La Paz, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, Tarija; Argentina: Jujuy (Calilegua), Salta (T: San Andrés, west of San Ramón de la Nueva). Epifytic, 300.2000 m. Flowering period southern winter and spring.
