- Initially erect, later pendulous, up to 1 m or longer, branching basally. Stems 10-30 cm long, to 7 cm wide. Ribs 3. Main spines 5-14, 10-12 mm long, yellow-brown to brown, needlelike. Lesser spines 20-40, white, hairlike. Flowers 5.5-6 cm long, to 4 cm wide. Ovary and receptacle red-brown to greenish, with scales and grey felt. Outer petals pink. inner petals white. Anthers in two rows, white, pollen yellowish. Stigmas white to yellowish. Fruit ellipsoid, 3 cm long, 2 cm diameter, yellow to pale green, with felt and hairy brown spines and white hairy spines. Pulpa white. Seeds black.
During withering flowers can become self fertile.
