- Up to 3 m long, strongly branched. Stems 10-12 cm broad, thin, deepley crenate, dull green. Flower 25-30 cm long, to 12 cm diameter, sometimes scented. Receptacle 13-15 cm long, red to purple, with narrow scales, which are widely apart and 1 cm long. Outer petals reddish to to amber, narrow, to 10 cm long. Style white, stigmas cream.

- Mexico: Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco; Guatemala: Izabal, Alta Vera Paz, Quiché, Venezuela; Brazil; 200-600 m. Widely cultivated and run wild as far as New Guinea.
