- Stems three-angled, sometimes four or five-angled, 2 4 cm diameter. Areoles 2 3 cm apart. Spines 1 3, conical, 1 2 mm long, brown. Flower 25 30 cm diameter. Ovary with small scales, felt and spines. Receptacle with larger scales. Fruit ovoid, tuberculate, with bristly spines, red.

- Argentina (Chaco, Corrientes, Formosa, Misiones); Bolivia, Brazil: common outside Amazonia; Paraguay. Flowering time southern spring and summer.
